Countless users were giving out confusing information abouthow often to use a derma rolleras well as how to decide the correct needle size. A number of people suggested that you need to derma roll daily to see significant results. This is absolutely not true and can really result in prolonged redness, irritation, dryness and inflammation!

Since the Dermaproduces 540 of micro punctures/micro-channels in your skin, performing a treatment on a daily basis together with the wrong needle size can in fact produce undesirable results.

Here, I am going to discuss various topics including different needles sizes, how often to conduct a treatment and their benefits.

Important Note:

If your skin is still red or irritated from the previous treatment, you should never start a new treatment regardless of what the guideline stated below. You should wait for your skin to fully recovered first!

0.25 mm Needle Size

If you are looking to address wrinkles and scars, then this is NOT the needle size to use. 0.25 mm roller is simply for boosting skin care product absorption aka “transdermal absorption”.

It cannot stimulate collagen growth, but it can thicken your top skin layer called “epidermis.” It is a great way to drastically increase the effectiveness of your favorite skin care serum or cream.

Benefits

0.25mm needle size is not really intended to treat wrinkles and scars. It is strictly used for boosting topical skin care product absorption.  As a result, this will increase the concentration of topical active ingredients inside your skin.

If you are planning to boost topical product absorption immediately after a treatment, your product must not contain irritating, toxic or comedogenic ingredients.  Otherwise, you should wait 24 hours before usage.

Drawback

It cannot stimulate collagen growth.  Slight skin redness is common, and it will usually disappear within 24 hours.

Invasive treatments such as chemical peel, laser or microdermabrasion should be avoided until your skin is fully recovered.

Will I bleed?

0.25mm produces no bleeding.

How painful is it?

0.25mm is rarely painful.  You will probably experience no pain at all.

How often to Use 0.25 mm Derma Roller?

Since derma rolling can cause your skin to lose moisture, daily treatment can trigger redness, dryness and irritation.  You can perform dermaroller treatment every other day with a 0.25 mm roller with virtually no side effects.

0.5 mm Needle Size

If you are looking to treat shallow wrinkle, scars, UV damage and hyperpigmentation with the added benefit of boosting skin care product absorption, then you should look into using 0.5 mm roller.  This is a popular roller for anyone looking to have multiple treatments on a monthly basic.

Benefits

0.5 mm can treat fine lines, shallow scarring, mild stretchmarks, hyper pigmentation and sun damage. It also boosts absorption of topical products.  It can also thicken your top skin layer called “epidermis”.

You can use 0.5 mm once per week/month. It is less painful than longer microneedles and have shorter recovery time.  The usage of numbing cream is usually not necessary.

Please Note that 0.5mm can achieve similar results of 0.75mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm and above except you need more treatments. If you are unsure which roller is ideal for you, then 0.5mm is the ideal choice.

Drawback

One drawback of using 0.5 mm roller is that it can only trigger mild collagen growth. As a result, additional treatments are necessary to produce noticeable skin improvement.

Also, you can only use it ONCE per month or ONCE per weekONLYif your skin can tolerate weekly treatment without prolonged redness, irritation and dryness.

Skin redness, dryness and peeling are quite common, and they usually disappear after several days.

Invasive treatments such as chemical peel, laser or microdermabrasion should be avoided until your skin is fully recovered.

Will I bleed?

0.5mm will produce minimal bleeding.  You will get several blood spots with aggressive rolling.

How painful is it?

0.5mm is slighty painful.  You will probably experience a sensation that is similar to cat scratch.

How often to Use 0.5 mm Derma Roller?

You can perform micro needling treatment once/month with no side effect.

You can treat your skin once/week ONLY if your skin is able to tolerate weekly treatment without experiencing excessive redness, dryness, irritation or itchiness.

Although some advanced users use 0.5mm roller several times per week, beginners/average usersSHOULD NEVERattempt mulitple treatments on a weekly basis with 0.5mm!

0.75 to 1.0 mm Needle Size

0.75 to 1.0 mm rollers can induce collagen growth more effective than 0.5 mm. In addition to reducing sun damge and hyperpigmentation, these rollers are the perfect solution for treating shallow to deep wrinkles, scars and stretchmarks.

It can also boost skin care production absorption and efficacy. Many users also reported a reduction in rough skin texture and enjoyed a smoother complexion.

Benefits

0.75 to 1.0 mm can treat hyper-pigmentation, sun damage, shallow to deep wrinkles/scars and stretchmarks.

Drawback

Because of deeper needle penetration, a 4 to 7 day recovery time is required.  Skin redness, dryness and peeling are common, and they usually last for 3 to 7 days depending on the aggressiveness of your procedure.

Invasive treatments such as chemical peel, laser or microdermabrasion should be avoided until your skin is fully recovered.

Will I bleed?

0.75 to 1.0mm will produce mild to moderate bleeding.

How painful is it?

0.75 to 1.0mm is moderately painful.  If you have low tolerance to pain or have sensitive skin, you might need numbing cream.

How often to Use 0.75 to 1.0 mm Derma Roller?

For beginner, I suggest using 0.75 to 1.0 mm once every 4 to 6 weeks.

You can ONLY treat your skin twice monthly if your skin is able to tolerate multiple treatments without experiencing excessive redness, dryness, irritation or itchiness.

Please do not have more than 2 treatments/per month as this will slow down collagen production and increase side effects.

You should only have another procedure only when your skin is fully recovered.

1.5 to 3.0 mm Needle Size

In case you are thinking of using 1.5 to 3.0 mm rollers for a quick and easy result, you need to fully understand the risk! I have seen people acting irresponsibly by advocating facial treatments with 1.5 mm and above needles. This can be harmful to your skin if you perform the treatment improperly!

Also, this is an incredibly painful and bloody treatment. If you are still considering trying out 1.5 to 3.0 mm rollers, you MUST 100% ensure that you have professional supervision in order to prevent unnecessary damage to your skin.

Benefits

1.5 to 3.0 mm rollers can treat SEVERE scarring or stretch marks. It is safer to use them on your body than on your face.  These rollers are commonly used for treating burned scars.

Drawback

Due to the needle thickness and deeper skin punctures, these rollers can cause side effects if overly or improperly use.  This is also a painful and bloody treatment.  Applying numbing cream just before treatment is a MUST.  Also, it is strongly recommended that you perform the treatment with professional supervision.

Skin redness, dryness, peeling and swelling are not unusual, and they usually last about 7 days depending on the aggressiveness of your procedure.

Invasive treatments such as chemical peel, laser or microdermabrasion should be avoided until your skin is fully recovered.

Will I bleed?

1.5 to 3.0mm will produces moderate to significant bleeding.

How painful is it?

1.5 to 3.0mm is very painful.  Numbing cream is definitely required.

How often to Use 1.5 to 3.0 mm Derma Roller?

You should wait a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks for a full skin recovery before attempting a new treatment

DO NOT use 1.5 to 3.0mm daily.

Microneedle Roller Results

Sometimes you will notice an instant plumping of your skin as blood and growth factors are filling into your treatment area.   This is not permanent, and it will last 24 hours to several days.

Permanent reduction in wrinkles, scars or even stretch marks is very possible when new collagens and elastins are accumulating under your skin after 3 to 6 treatments.  Some users reported seeing over 60% improvement within 1 year!

Unfortunately, some people gave up after 1 session because they didn’t see immediate results.  In reality, microneedle therapy is a long term solution.  If you are looking for a miracle cure to remedy your skin problem, then plastic surgery is a more suitable choice for you.

How Often To Use a Dermaroller.

One of the most often asked question we at Derma Roller Shop hear is that how often should the derma roller be used.  We try to make it pretty simple for you to decide how often to use a dermarollerbased on what needle length derma roller you are using. Read more to find out exactly how often to use a dermaroller.

Natural Skin Cell Renewal Takes Time

Needling your skin too often, will not give you better results. Why not? Think about it, similarly like when you cut your finger, it takes time to heal. The tiny wounds created by the derma roller during skin needling also need time to heal and build collagen. Even when they are so much smaller than a knife cut, there is still time needed for your body to go through natural skin healing process.

Skin renewal & new collagen building continues for about 40 days after needling, this is also the main period to keep in mind when deciding how often to use a dermaroller.

Dermarolling treatments frequency based on dermaroller needle size

0.2-0.25 mm dermaroller may be used daily or every other day. This size improves the absorption of applied skin care products.

0.5 mm dermaroller may be used once every 3 weeks.

0.75 mm dermaroller may be used once every 4 weeks.

1.0 mm dermaroller may be used once a month (every 5-6 weeks).,

1.5 mm dermaroller may be used once every 6 weeks.

2.0-2.5 mm dermaroller may be used once every 8 weeks.

0.2 -0.25 mm Derma Rollers for Daily Use

You may use the 0.2 and 0.25 mm needle lengths daily for better skin care products absorption. These short needles will not promote new collagen building, but will help you benefit more from your skin care by helping them to absorb better.

0.5 – 2.5 mm Derma Rollers for Triggering Collagen Production

Do you want to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, acne scars or any other similar concern treated by skin needling? Then you probably use a derma roller with needles atleast 0.5 mm or even longer. Longer needle size derma rollers help to stimulate the new collagen building and skin renewal process.

As the collagen synthesis in your skin is entirely natural process, it takes time to occur like explained earlier. Do not disturb it by using the derma roller too often, be patient and use derma roller about once every 4-6 weeks.

Taking Care of Your Skin After Needling

Sometimes after needling, your skin may turn red

, similar like when sunburned, feel sensitive or slightly swollen after few hours of the treatment. It is quite normal. Keep your treated skin well moisturizedand avoid direct sunlight without quality sunscreen.

You may also notice some peeling

after few days, moisturize your skin and don’t let it dry. Apply quality skin care solutions that include Vitamins A, C and E so your skin could benefit most of them to support the new collagen synthesis in your skin. How Often To Use a Dermaroller Conclusion

Skin needling is a lot about patience.
